Phil Harrison Added to GDC

January 25th, 2007 . by jb

Picard HarrisonThis GDC is really shaping up this year, eh?

Phil Harrison joins the ranks attending GDC to help spread the knowledge.  Calling his keynote "Game 3.0", Harrison is aiming to educate the audience on developing and consuming in an "always on" environment.  Naturally, his speech will focus on the Playstation mentality, and should be pretty interesting in terms of content.

Roll that beautiful GDC event organizer footage!

"Each console cycle gives platforms the chance to reinvent the experiences they enable developers to provide to gamers. Phil Harrison is uniquely positioned to apply both his prescient creative abilities and his command of a globe-spanning network of leading development teams — to bring the entire developer community in on the giant leap forward of the PlayStation 3."

Phil's actually a pretty cool guy.  After the PS3's launch, he was the first to say that the first real game for the PS3 was going to be Motorstorm.

Touche Harrison…touche…

Havok Suite to Make PS3 Shine?

January 24th, 2007 . by jb

Make it so number 1...Like games where the stuff on the screen interacts in a realistic way?  So do we!

Havok had traditionally been a PC engine used specifically for physics emulation in games.  Nowadays, Havok has a full suite of tools they offer including:

  • Havok Physics (for physics!)
  • Havok Animation (for…animation!)
  • Havok Behavior (assists developers with AI)
  • Havok FX (for "physically-based 'special effects' phenomena…!!!)

With all these technologies being updated, Havok is boasting that PS3 development will be greatly enhanced, estimating it is 5 to 10 times faster then their previous release of the Havok Suite.  The trick is that Havok has built in heavy support for the PS3's many SPUs to help ease the load.

Hopefully this suite will help developers make the PS3's games feel like they are being played on a machine that is $200 more then it's competition.

Make it so!

Playstation 3 System Update 1.50

January 24th, 2007 . by Josh

Sony has issued their latest release for the Playstation 3 console, now bringing the firmware version to 1.5. Although this isn't as big as the promised update coming in March, it'll hopefully add some new features or at least fixes to the console.

Though the official site has not been updated yet with a list of changes, be sure to check out the Official Playstation website as they will (hopefully) be listing the changes to the latest update.

Wow, Another Delay

January 23rd, 2007 . by Josh

1up.com has been informed by Ubisoft that though GRAW 2 (Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2) for the Playstation 3 has not been canned, it will be delayed.

Yet another game people were looking forward to. Is this what we can expect from the “next-generation”? So far only a handful of good titles have been released, yet the rest is either crap, or delayed.

Virtua Fighter 5 Goes Gold

January 23rd, 2007 . by Josh

Thats right, Virtua Fighter 5 for the Playstation 3 has gone gold. For all of you who were waiting for a great title to show off your PS3, this is defiantly the one to get, if you haven't already.

But to crush your hopes a bit, it appears Sega is taking the easy way out, and not including online support, not even for leaderboards for this upcoming title, In this day in age, if a major company like Sega can't add online support for one of their biggest upcoming games, that's just sad.

No PS3 Price Cuts Anytime Soon

January 23rd, 2007 . by jb

Jack TrettonIn a recent discussion with SCEA's Jack Tretton, he revealed that the PS3 will be difficult to reduce in price. When asked if the PS3 would reduce in price similar to the way the PS2 did in the past, he replied:

"No… There's a heck of a lot more under the hood and it costs us more money to make it"

I really hate the stance that Sony is taking with the PS3.  The following quote alone sums up the way they think about this stuff:

"I think the consumers that get their hands on a PlayStation 3 clearly see the value and not only want to buy one for $599, in some instances they're willing to pay ridiculous prices to buy one on eBay."

Sony doesn't get it.  The PS3 is going to have to be a gaming system first, Blu-Ray player second.  It's true, the PS3 is a great value…for a Blu-Ray player.  Not all gamers want Blu-Ray players.  End of story.

Now slash the price on this thing so I can buy it!
