Gentoo On Playstation 3?

January 10th, 2007 . by Josh

While the Playstation 3 makes a wonderful "media" addition to anyones collection. The fact you can install Linux on it, makes it even better.

The folks over at QJ have an excellent article with instructions on how you can install the fast growing Gentoo Linux on your Playstation 3 console. If you're interested in learning Linux or just want to try something other than Yellow Dog or Fedora on your beast of a console, be sure to check it out, Gentoo is a great distribution.

Nintendo and Sony Recieve Emmy’s

January 10th, 2007 . by jb

Emmy LOLZIn what appears to be a randomly created and useless award: the Nintendo D-Pad and the Dual Shock have received an Emmy in the category of Peripheral Development and Technological Impact of Video Game Controllers.

Sony jumped the gun, and announced that their SIXAXIS controller had received an Emmy, touting the success of the SIXAXIS and the PS3.  But it seems that Sony neglected to mention that they were, in fact, sharing the award with Nintendo.  And that they had, in fact, won for the DualShock controller…not the SIXAXIS.

It appears as though Sony is trying to grab at any positive press it is getting, and again, further sinks their credibility.  I miss the Sony of old…

Is anyone else seeing this console launch as the dirtiest PR battle to date?

Sony And Midway Sitting In A Tree

January 8th, 2007 . by Josh

K.i.s.s.i.n.g, well anyways. Midway and Sony have announced that six classic Midway titles will be released on the Playstation Store.

  • Mortal Kombat II
  • Rampage World Tour
  • Joust
  • Gauntlet II
  • Rampart
  • Championship Sprint

Best part of all this? Yeah apparently they'll be online as well. Mortal Kombat II online? I see many deaths in the future. Keep it up Sony, you're starting to prove me wrong.

Sony Meets 1 Million PS3 Goal

January 7th, 2007 . by Josh

Through Business Week, Sony is stating that they have shipped their estimated goal of Playstation 3 consoles to North America in 2006. Their new goal is to reach 6 million Playstation 3 consoles by March of 2007.

Now that they seem to have fixed the Blu-Ray diode problem that caused many manufacturing issues with the newly released console, we hope many more will be shipped over the next few months.

I for one would love to see Sony continue mass shipments of the console. Not just for their sake that they might sell, but also to stop stores such as GameStop, EBGames and Walmart from selling console bundles for over $1,000.

Full Auto 2 Review

January 6th, 2007 . by Josh

GameTrailers.com has a review of the Playstation 3's latest title Full Auto 2. The original Full Auto title came as a Xbox 360 Burnout/Twisted Metal rip off racer and unfortunately didn't do so well.

Will this one hold better ground on the Playstation 3? Probably not. According to the review, lack of solid online and the general feeling that this game is rental worthy and not buying doesn't make it sound all that great.

Playstation 3 Network Rocked

December 23rd, 2006 . by Josh

Gran Turismo HD has been released early it appears and with that everybody is attempting to download the demo. The result of everyone at once trying to download it? Yeah the Playstation 3 Network has been knocked out.

Of course it's good that Sony is releasing the GT: HD demo in not only Japan but also North America, and it's not suprising that so many people are trying to download the famed demo.

Virtua Fighter 5 To 360?

December 21st, 2006 . by Josh

Apparently it's true, According to Next-Gen.biz Sega will be releasing the famed fighter on Microsoft's Xbox 360 in the late summer of 2007.

People thought VF5 would be a Sony exclusive but it seems that wasn't the case. But honestly, with game development costs as high as they are now, do people STILL think there will be many exclusives? Hell no, won't happen.

PS3’s Hype Already Dead?

December 20th, 2006 . by jb

PS LogoAccording to an online tracking firm called NotifyWire, the hype over the PS3 is waning.

NotifyWire is a service that will notify their customers as to when a specific product is available from a reputable online site.  They are saying that there are plenty of PS3's available at this time, and they just aren't being picked up.  The apparent culprit is forced software and hardware bundles alongside the already high price of the console.  In comparing the current PS3 status to that of the similar XBox 360 launch, Ian Drake (NotifyWire) said this:

"Last year we tracked several one thousand dollar Xbox 360 bundles which would sell out in less than two minutes after becoming available."

Drake then goes on to add that there were was a retailer offering a $1000 PS3 bundle, and it had been listed for over 12 hours before being picked up.

"This sort of thing didn't happen with the Xbox 360 until well after Christmas."

My guess is that it's probably got a lot to do with the negative press the PS3 has been getting in the mass media.  Parents need to justify spending $600, and if they are hearing only negative comments from the media…

I'd be surprised if the PS3 was a failure, but I wouldn't be surprised if it took them more then a year to pull out of the slump.
