“The Battle for the Living Room”

January 17th, 2007 . by jb

The guys over at QJ.net have put together a synopsis of the current situation of movie downloading services available.  The noted combatants in this fight are Microsoft, Sony and Apple.

  • Microsoft has their Live Marketplace movie downloads.
  • Sony has their PSP movie downloading deal in the works.
  • Apple has their Apple TV (previously iTV) with their already available movie downloads

Jump on over and check out the piece, as it does a good job of breaking down the individual companies and their potential.

GamesIndustry.biz Confirms Obvious

January 17th, 2007 . by jb

OH NOES!Insert beatingDeadHorse.jpeg

In what is still considered news apparently, GamesIndustry.biz is reporting that 50% of game retailers have PS3 consoles in stock, with the Wii having none available.  The article then goes on to quote a Sony representative as saying:

"It isn't because demand has weakened, it is because we have kept the supply pipeline moving"

So, the PS3 isn't selling like hotcakes.  The Nintendo Wii is selling like hotcakes (and selling more).  Yet, PS3 consoles being in stock is not an indication of waning interest?!  You can argue price points all you want, but if there are units in stores at this early stage of the launch, then no, it isn't going well.

I don't hate the PS3 (want one myself), I just hate shoddy news stories and Sony's shoddy PR.   Gamers want games, not excuses.

Just A Wii Bit Loud

January 15th, 2007 . by Josh

Not only does the Nintendo Wii reboot itself for every little thing you do with it. But now a report has come out that the little console that could also makes the most amount of noise.

At least while reading disc media that is. But still, what a surprise that is, I thought the Xbox 360 would take that title by far.

Valve Randomly Slams the PS3

January 15th, 2007 . by jb

ValveIn what I'd file under the "should keep to yourself" category, the chief of software over a Valve has decided to unleash a verbal barrage on the PS3.

With such dandies like:

"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels"

"I think It's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted."

"…they should just cancel it and do a do over"

The same person then goes on to say that Nintendo is doing everything right and that they are the true success story.

Now I have my own criticisms of both consoles, but going as far as calling a "do over" Sony is a rather dumb statement.  Sony would go so much further under if they just stopped supporting a $600 piece of equipment months after it's launch.

And to say Nintendo is doing everything right is just the opposite extreme taken.  Nintendo is far from doing everything right.  With the usual post-launch game drought coming up, Nintendo looks like they haven't learned at all from the N64 or the Gamecube.  Not to mention that online play is completely nonexistent at this point.

For this guy's sake, I hope he was drunk, as his credibility in the gaming industry just got hit for massive damage.

GameStop/EB Trade In

January 13th, 2007 . by Josh

GameStop and EB recently published a trade in deal through a upcoming flyer that will knock $100 off both versions of the Playstation 3 console.

What does it take for them to magically forget about the $100 on the Playstation 3's cost? Well you must trade in your working Playstation 2 (with cables), one dual shock controller and any brand 8mb memory card. Not too bad really since the PS3 will play your past games as well, it's a good way to get rid of a console and get your new one!

Warhawk Preview

January 12th, 2007 . by jb

Warhawk: thee game that was used to demo the SIXAXIS controller oh so long ago.  That crazy tilty/flyee game that appeared to be cool, but quite complicated to control.

Well that game has been taking on some facelifts.  The game now features aerial combat and ground combat of various forms.  With the ability to fight in planes, ride in tanks, and just shoot stuff up in general: Warhawk is taking on a much more epic gameplay experience.

It's great to hear that this game is picking up steam, as it's initial showcase looked far less then stellar.  In fact it looked awful.

Check out the source link for pictures and impressions of Warhawk for the PS3.

The Truth Will Set You Free!

January 12th, 2007 . by Josh

Earlier in the week a lot of news sites were reporting that Konami canceled several games that were in development for the Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii. Konami is now denying such a rumor is true, those games in question are still being worked on and are planned for release.

The games in question that everyone thought were canceled were:

  • Gradius (Playstation 3)
  • Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball (Playstation 3)
  • Some untitled action game (Playstation 3)
  • Some untitled RPG game (Playstation 3)
  • Some untitled action adventure game (Wii)
  • And a untitled RPG game (Wii)

It's very nice to see Konami coming out and revealing the truth to everyone, now that these titles are actually not being axed, I hope it too stops rumors that Microsoft might be buying them out.

Official NPD Hardware Sales for December

January 11th, 2007 . by jb

It isn't pretty folks…in fact it's extremely messy.

I've taken the liberty of adding some color to make the chart seem happier.

HW Sales (month and LTD)

    Nintendo DS:     1.6 million – 9.2 million
    PS2:                  1.4 million – 37.1 million
    Xbox:                360 1.1 million – 4.5 million
    PSP:                  953.2 K – 6.7 million
    GBA:                  850.7 K – 35.1 million
    Wii:                   604.2 K – 1.1 million
    PS3:                  490.7 K – 687.3 K

Most notably, the Wii appears to have undersold, the PS3 seems about at expected, and the 360 appears to have exceeded expectations slightly.

Obviously there are tons of factors that come into play, but numbers don't lie.  This console race isn't over…not by a long shot.

Blu-Ray To Allow Copying… Wait, What?

January 10th, 2007 . by Josh

The whole thing of this next generation form of media was copy protection and DRM, not just high defentition. But in a strange turn of face, Sony is now saying they will be including portable media on each Blu-Ray movie for portable players (cross your fingers for PSP support!).

Sony Pictures Entertainment will include portable files on Blu-Ray DVDs that can be transferred without a download, David Bishop, head of Sony's home entertainment unit, said in an interview this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Sony may add the feature this year, Bishop said. "It's not currently part of anything on our current release schedule, but we'll probably roll it out sometime this year," Bishop said on Jan. 8.

Very interesting, but as a lot of other people have stated, Sony in the past has promised many things. Take this with a grain of salt, but pray daily that it happens.
