Nintendo Slaps Down New VC Games

January 15th, 2007 . by Josh

Another week is upon us all, so Nintendo has released their new Virtual Console games for the week!

  • Moto Roader
  • Xevious
  • R-Type III

Kind of another weak list of Virtual Console releases, but keep faith ye Wii owners, soon some good titles will come around.

Valve Randomly Slams the PS3

January 15th, 2007 . by jb

ValveIn what I'd file under the "should keep to yourself" category, the chief of software over a Valve has decided to unleash a verbal barrage on the PS3.

With such dandies like:

"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels"

"I think It's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted."

"…they should just cancel it and do a do over"

The same person then goes on to say that Nintendo is doing everything right and that they are the true success story.

Now I have my own criticisms of both consoles, but going as far as calling a "do over" Sony is a rather dumb statement.  Sony would go so much further under if they just stopped supporting a $600 piece of equipment months after it's launch.

And to say Nintendo is doing everything right is just the opposite extreme taken.  Nintendo is far from doing everything right.  With the usual post-launch game drought coming up, Nintendo looks like they haven't learned at all from the N64 or the Gamecube.  Not to mention that online play is completely nonexistent at this point.

For this guy's sake, I hope he was drunk, as his credibility in the gaming industry just got hit for massive damage.

Wii on the DS

January 12th, 2007 . by jb

Why not, right?  It's not like the screen is ungodly small for such an interface.  I mean, I can see tons of uses for having your Wii displayed on your portable gaming system! This alone will revolutionize the industry!

Well no…no it won't.  But at least it's something us geeks can get wood over.

The Truth Will Set You Free!

January 12th, 2007 . by Josh

Earlier in the week a lot of news sites were reporting that Konami canceled several games that were in development for the Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii. Konami is now denying such a rumor is true, those games in question are still being worked on and are planned for release.

The games in question that everyone thought were canceled were:

  • Gradius (Playstation 3)
  • Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball (Playstation 3)
  • Some untitled action game (Playstation 3)
  • Some untitled RPG game (Playstation 3)
  • Some untitled action adventure game (Wii)
  • And a untitled RPG game (Wii)

It's very nice to see Konami coming out and revealing the truth to everyone, now that these titles are actually not being axed, I hope it too stops rumors that Microsoft might be buying them out.

Official NPD Hardware Sales for December

January 11th, 2007 . by jb

It isn't pretty folks…in fact it's extremely messy.

I've taken the liberty of adding some color to make the chart seem happier.

HW Sales (month and LTD)

    Nintendo DS:     1.6 million – 9.2 million
    PS2:                  1.4 million – 37.1 million
    Xbox:                360 1.1 million – 4.5 million
    PSP:                  953.2 K – 6.7 million
    GBA:                  850.7 K – 35.1 million
    Wii:                   604.2 K – 1.1 million
    PS3:                  490.7 K – 687.3 K

Most notably, the Wii appears to have undersold, the PS3 seems about at expected, and the 360 appears to have exceeded expectations slightly.

Obviously there are tons of factors that come into play, but numbers don't lie.  This console race isn't over…not by a long shot.

Doom Creator Praises/Ignores the Wii Remote

January 11th, 2007 . by jb

John CarmackJohn Carmack, the creator of the revolutionary FPS Doom has spoken out about the Wii Remote in a recent interview with Game Informer.

"You can get ten times the graphics power, and you can make a prettier picture, but when somebody makes a new IO device that really changes the way that people interact with the game, that's going to have a larger benefit there.  So I'm really pleased with what they're (Nintendo) doing with the Wii and with the DS-and they're doing innovative things"

Sounds awesome right!  But then he follows it up with:

"But our current generation of game technology is not targeted at the Wii. Maybe that was a mistake on our part originally, but we have been looking strictly at the 360, PS3 and PC as what we want to simultaneously develop on. We probably aren't going to be able to hit the Wii with the same technology platform."

So the man likes innovation, but only cares about graphics in the end.  Can't say I blame him, as graphics in an FPS really enhance the experience.  Hopefully developers in the future will embrace the new design that the Wii offers, and us gamers can get some really innovative games to go with our really innovative controller.

Nintendo and Sony Recieve Emmy’s

January 10th, 2007 . by jb

Emmy LOLZIn what appears to be a randomly created and useless award: the Nintendo D-Pad and the Dual Shock have received an Emmy in the category of Peripheral Development and Technological Impact of Video Game Controllers.

Sony jumped the gun, and announced that their SIXAXIS controller had received an Emmy, touting the success of the SIXAXIS and the PS3.  But it seems that Sony neglected to mention that they were, in fact, sharing the award with Nintendo.  And that they had, in fact, won for the DualShock controller…not the SIXAXIS.

It appears as though Sony is trying to grab at any positive press it is getting, and again, further sinks their credibility.  I miss the Sony of old…

Is anyone else seeing this console launch as the dirtiest PR battle to date?

Link to the Past: Makeover Edition!

January 10th, 2007 . by jb

Parallel WorldsDid you think that the Zelda: LttP needed some heavy edits?  Did you think the story was crap and needed a to be rewritten?!  Just plain like A Link to the Past and want to see it reskinned?

A team has been hacking the Link to the Past ROM and revamping everything.  From the item selections, to the enemies, to the baddies, to the character model.

This is similar to another project whose goal is remaking the Ocarina of Time by hacking the Link to the Past ROM.

I actually think it's a pretty cool concept.  It really goes to show how loyal the Zelda fanbase is, that they're willing to take the time to recreate a game they love.  There should be little argument that LttP was one of, if not the best Zelda game made.  It's game design and spritey graphics have made it timeless, and I constantly revisit the gem myself.

New Virtual Console Games!

January 8th, 2007 . by Josh

With all this news about Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo has been a bit dwarfed. So here is the list of Virtual Console games that have been released today:

  • Gradius
  • Soldier Blade
  • Dungeon Explorer

Not a bad list, it's good to see Nintendo has kept their word of releasing a good amount of classic games for their latest console.
