The Nightly Play: 10 Best Weapons

February 7th, 2007 . by jb

Oh GameTrailers, how far you've come.  This is a video I remember where they breakdown the top 10 video game weapons of all-time.

The video does a great job of varying up its picks and getting to the goods.  Their first pick is my favorite surprise, such a sick weapon…

The Voice of Mario Speaketh!

February 6th, 2007 . by jb

Mario Sneaking a PeakSo Mario's had this voice actor dude ever since Mario 64 (if I recall correctly), Charles Martinet. He's recently decided to give up some Super Mario Galaxy lovin'

It'sa you! Charles Martinet!

Mario Galaxy is going to be the most exciting, amazing fun ever. I played a little preview of it and I had goosebumps of joy and was giddy with laughter. The new Wii controller has so much versatility and makes possible all these things you could never imagine doing before.

It is like magic. This game takes it to a completely different level for Mario. I'm not allowed to reveal yet what I say in Galaxy but I can tell you there will be some surprises.

There'd better be surprises, dammit! How awful would that be if it was just re-used Mario 64 soundbits? In any case, Mario news is always good news…

And it's coming straight from the horses mouth, so you know that it's not biased!

Mortal Kombat 80453 Unreal 3 Edition

February 6th, 2007 . by joshtest

MKLOLWell it looks like Final Fantasy isn't going to be the only one adopting the Unreal 3 engine. Apparently Ed Boon, who you all know, was "inspired, totally inspired" by playing Gears of War, that he decided the latest Mortal Kombat, 80453, if I recall correctly, will be using the Unreal engine. Straight from the Noob Sabot man himself,

"To me, when I saw Gears of War, I was like, 'Holy shit! That's the look that we've been talking about"

Because obviously, as a video game designer, you have no idea what graphic engines exist until the video game sporting it actually is released? No insider info, no research? Sounds like a half shotty job of research for the newest MK game, which will probably translate into a just as crappy Mortal Kombat game. Not to mention the game is expected to be out early 2008, and the fact that they just now decided which rendering engine to use? But hey, I have some hope for it at least.

HE SAID THEY'RE REMOVING CHANGEABLE FIGHTING STANCES.

The Nightly Play: Video Games Live

February 6th, 2007 . by jb

If you haven’t been, you really should go. The music is great, the nostalgia value is high, and the atmosphere is amazing.

At the event, I won the very laptop I’m making this post from (true story).

Here is a classic game run-through that they do. But seriously, go see a show if you have a soul.

LOTR says LifeR

February 5th, 2007 . by joshtest

LOTR1AGIWhos to say fantasy based MMOs never do anything new or revolutionary!

Well, I do. Anyway…

Seems Midway has such great hopes for the upcoming LOTR MMORPG, that they have decided to try something new, lifetime membership. For 200 dollars, you can play the game all you want, forevars. The math comes out to be that the 200 dollar fee is roughly 15 months worth of the game, so this has me wondering, since there is seems to be no hype and or interest in this game, does Midway actually PLAN on having this MMO last for more than 15 months?

However, you do receive an obviously kickass uh, ring of agility, and cloak of regeneration… as your special pre-sale items! UNIQUE LAWLS.

From Midways press release;

The Lord of the Rings Online Founder's Program* offers players two different membership options:

* Only $9.99 per month subscription price!

OR

* Just $199 for a Lifetime Membership!

In addition to these special pricing options, The Lord of the Rings Online Founders receive:

• Open Beta: Guaranteed access provides Founders the first
opportunity to create a character and enter Middle-earth currently
planned for March 30, 2007

• Character Roll-Over: Moves the character that you created during
the Open Beta into the live service –along with the stats, levels,
items, and experience that character earned prior to launch!

• Bonus Items: Two special in-game items that are only available to those who pre-order:

o Enchanted Cloak of Regeneration

o Ring of Agility

The Nightly Play: Tecmo Super Bowl

February 4th, 2007 . by jb

Screw Madden being used as the standard to determine who will win games. With the Superbowl tonight, I wonder how this crazy prediction simulation holds up!

For anyone who hates freedom, the score of the Superbowl was 29-17, Colts taking the cake. How did the simulation video have it going?!

Interesting commentary awaits you…

The Nightly Play: Mario Bros. Retrospective

February 4th, 2007 . by jb

I have to give props to Josh for this pick, as he brought it to my attention some time ago.

The video follows Mario throughout his evolutions, and keeps pushing forward with killer violin action. I don't know why, but the music really makes this
video so much more epic then it originally would have been. There is a Zelda one done in similar fashion, but that'll be for another night.

Rated T for Titillating.

The Nightly Play: The 1K Project II

February 2nd, 2007 . by jb

This video bleeds awesome.

Imagine you have 1000 high-res cars on your screen at once, jumping off platforms and navigating branching paths.  Sounds kinda lame, but actually it's really a sight to behold.

The music (intro from Gone in 60 Seconds) really adds to this video, and I've watched it a bunch of times today cause it's just that good.

Bon Appetit

The Nightly Play: Street Fighter, Chan-Style

February 1st, 2007 . by jb

A live version of Street Fighter has be rediscovered over at The Last Boss.

The clip is so good that I had to post it.  I had other candidates for today, but they're benched.  Jackie wins.
