It’s been awhile since this subject last came up, but back in May of 2008 we joined a site formed around other podcasts called Platform Nation. It was about September or so of that year we also left Platform Nation due to some differences in opinion and we both just went our own separate ways.

Two years later and a bit of growing up between both, Critical Strike and Platform Nation have now once again joined forces to fight the evils that is…. something. We’re once again excited to be rejoined with some of our favorite podcasts and people we once worked with and hopefully it’ll be good for all the parties involved.

For those who do not know about Critical Strike, it’s a simple podcast that is recorded every fortnight by Josh and Kyle. We pretty much just discuss the games we’ve been playing and occasionally spice things up with discussions of video game music or retro game challenges between each other which serves as a nice way to introduce someone to a game they’ve never played.

As most of you know I spent this past weekend in northern New Hampshire at the worlds largest arcade Funspot. Nothing can describe how great this place can be if you have deep appreciation for older games.

I brought my new camcorder with me but sadly I forgot the larger memory stick for it thus leaving me with only 2gb of space to record on. It’s not so bad, I was able to record a quick walk through of Funspot’s first floor which is the main attraction there anyway.

Also we have a official Critical Strike Twitter account, Kyle and I both have the info though for the most part it’s mainly just been the site updating it, but if you want to follow we’ll start to communicate through it as well.

It’s pretty well known that in these parts of the great vast interweb we love our good friends The Megas and Entertainment System. After meeting both bands last year during their Megatainment Tour and hearing afterward that both bands decided to get together and work on a Mega Man 1 EP, you could easily say I was very excited for it.

Well the time has finally come, both bands have finally completed their ends of the EP and it’s available for public consumption! The EP is a four song face melting session of Mega Man goodness that is–in my opinion pretty fair priced at $5 if you so choose to buy it via digital download or a additional $3 for shipping of the cd!

I’d like to see our listeners support these two bands as they’ve given me some awesome tunes to play on Critical Music as well as being part of a growing list of video game based bands!

So if you’d like to hear a song from the album then go to The Megas myspace page or to buy the album head over to The Megas website and show them your support

We’d like to have some messages from our fellow podcasters and of course our listeners.

If you’d like to take part in this, then it’s pretty simple. All you need to do is record a short message with some well wishes for us in a mp3 format then just mail it to me at cstrikepodcast[at]gmail[dot]com. Just try to do us a favor and get these to us by May 9th.

Pretty simple? Yeah and it would mean quite a bit to us so please take a few minutes out of your busy schedules and hook us up with some encouraging messages.

This is your typical episode where we cover our top five gaming podcasts, what we've been up to since the last episode, the video game music challenge. For our discussion the topic this week was based off a article on GamesRadar about game franchises evolving or revolutionizing.

If you would like to submit your answer for the video game music challenge then head over to our forums, register and message Josh with your answer.

And if you would, please digg the Playgasm Podcast, we'd appreciate it.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm totally looking forward to this game, and now that the goals have been set to achieve a storyline unlike any other, well, makes me want it even more. BioWare's Ray Muzyka has a few choice words in an interview regarding the game.

Muzyka calls it "Jack Bauer in space."

"You have complex moral choices
to make. You're out to save the galaxy. You're going to have to do
things that don't seem like they're good to do that."

He also mentions the one achievement they wish to accomplish in the game, moving dialogue, without the dialogue. Muzyka explains that eyes and motion are much more powerful tools to convey words than words themselves, and he wishes to reproduce that in Mass Effect.

Sounds kinky. Due in May.

Any other character I probably wouldn't care, but we all love Mega Man, and those who don't just say they don't to make me mad!

Anywho, the first intros sound is somewhat screwed up, but you get the idea from there. Plus the Mega Man series has some fantastic video game music in it, so enjoy.

Dear [insert higher power here], don't let this happen! 2k Sports at least for me has become my refuge from crappy sports titles that EA releases. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way, though 2k doesn't put out a football title at this time, their hockey games still destroy EA's attempt at one.

With all the lawsuits and stock issues surrounding father company Take-Two is this the perfect time for EA to step in and purchase their sports division? Apparently so. Though no real details of a possible purchase have come out, the most we've seen is analyst giving information, which can generally be taken with a grain of salt.

But still, EA stay away from my hockey series! Keep releasing $60 roster updates under the Madden football name.

There has been a lot of zombie love in the air. Capcom made Dead Rising, plenty of PC based zombie mods coming out and now Metal Gear and Zone of the Enders creator Hideo Kojima wants to make a zombie game. In a interview with Edge Magazine the man had to say this:

The zombie idea I have is a bit different…Imagine a large town where
half the inhabitants are zombies. Users would subscribe, get inside the
town and get bitten. At that stage they become undead and can't control
their character – all they can do is modify the camera angles… They'd
see their character attacking humans and have to pay just to watch!
The only way they could end it is by opening another account,
hunting themselves down and killing themselves. Of course, the problem
is that your second character can get bitten as well

Although I'm not quite sold on the part where you can't control your zombie character, I think that would be pretty cool. Imagine getting the chance to blend in with the pack of undead, then sneak around and bite a player in the face.

For the upcoming release of FFXII in PAL territories, Patrick Stewart has been selected to do the voice overs for the commercials.

In addition to Mr. Picard's voice, the people of London get a midnight launch event with the executive producer and director of the game. The event will hand out such goodies as Moogles and soundtracks to the first 100 purchasers, and a contest for best FF-related costume.

Of course, the important part to note about this entire article is the fact that Mr. Picard was involved, and that my friend, is great news.

He's recently decided to give up some Super Mario Galaxy lovin'

It'sa you! Charles Martinet!

Mario Galaxy is going to be the most exciting, amazing fun ever. I played a little preview of it and I had goosebumps of joy and was giddy with laughter. The new Wii controller has so much versatility and makes possible all these things you could never imagine doing before.

It is like magic. This game takes it to a completely different level for Mario. I'm not allowed to reveal yet what I say in Galaxy but I can tell you there will be some surprises.

There'd better be surprises, dammit! How awful would that be if it was just re-used Mario 64 soundbits? In any case, Mario news is always good news…

And it's coming straight from the horses mouth, so you know that it's not biased!

Apparently Ed Boon, who you all know, was "inspired, totally inspired" by playing Gears of War, that he decided the latest Mortal Kombat, 80453, if I recall correctly, will be using the Unreal engine. Straight from the Noob Sabot man himself,

"To me, when I saw Gears of War, I was like, 'Holy shit! That's the look that we've been talking about"

Because obviously, as a video game designer, you have no idea what graphic engines exist until the video game sporting it actually is released? No insider info, no research? Sounds like a half shotty job of research for the newest MK game, which will probably translate into a just as crappy Mortal Kombat game. Not to mention the game is expected to be out early 2008, and the fact that they just now decided which rendering engine to use? But hey, I have some hope for it at least.

HE SAID THEY'RE REMOVING CHANGEABLE FIGHTING STANCES.

Well, I do. Anyway…

Seems Midway has such great hopes for the upcoming LOTR MMORPG, that they have decided to try something new, lifetime membership. For 200 dollars, you can play the game all you want, forevars. The math comes out to be that the 200 dollar fee is roughly 15 months worth of the game, so this has me wondering, since there is seems to be no hype and or interest in this game, does Midway actually PLAN on having this MMO last for more than 15 months?

However, you do receive an obviously kickass uh, ring of agility, and cloak of regeneration… as your special pre-sale items! UNIQUE LAWLS.

From Midways press release;

The Lord of the Rings Online Founder's Program* offers players two different membership options:

    * Only $9.99 per month subscription price!

OR

    * Just $199 for a Lifetime Membership!

In addition to these special pricing options, The Lord of the Rings Online Founders receive:

• Open Beta: Guaranteed access provides Founders the first
opportunity to create a character and enter Middle-earth currently
planned for March 30, 2007

• Character Roll-Over: Moves the character that you created during
the Open Beta into the live service –along with the stats, levels,
items, and experience that character earned prior to launch!

• Bonus Items: Two special in-game items that are only available to those who pre-order:

o Enchanted Cloak of Regeneration

o Ring of Agility

The video follows Mario throughout his evolutions, and keeps pushing forward with killer violin action. I don't know why, but the music really makes this
video so much more epic then it originally would have been. There is a Zelda one done in similar fashion, but that'll be for another night.

Her latest blog post, however, really echoes something I've been saying for quite sometime now: gamers are angry people.

She makes a lot of great points about how the industry is really divided between consumer and the corporations.

Definitely worth checking out the article, and if nothing else, I just showed you a hot girl getting heavy with a gaming device.

Er…easier I mean. As in easier to make…not sleep with. Sorry for the misleading title dendraphiliacs…

SpeedTree is a multi-platform tool that allows the foliage in a game world to look super real. I mean how did we ever enjoy games in the past without the trees dancing to the caress of the wind?!

Games in the past that have used the tool are Call of Duty 3, Tiger Woods PGA Tour and Resistance: Fall of Man. Yeah that's right. Those games were easily 5.0's until the trees started waving.

In all seriousness, this tool is a nice way to help speed up development (at a price). This tool alone won't make amazing games come out faster, but at least developers can focus more on gameplay instead of how treelike the trees are in the forest that you're blowing up.
